New PC Assembly Procedure

This procedure describes how to build a modern, Pentium-class Windows 95 personal computer. Starting from components, the instructions here will tell you how to physically assemble the unit, get it running, test it, and even set up and optimize the operating system. My goal in creating this procedure was to make it simple and clear enough that virtually anyone could use it to make their own PC. To meet this goal I have provided a great deal of detail, far more than you will find in other similar descriptions. I have also distilled into these pages my experiences in building and rebuilding dozens of machines, so the common pitfalls are foreseen and you can better avoid the many mistakes that I made while building my first PCs without the benefit of a procedure such as this one. :^)
This assembly procedure is comprised entirely of subprocedures, to keep it to a reasonable length and to allow you to skip the details of any parts of the overall procedure that you already understand. The steps for the procedure are in the Index frame; each loads a subprocedure here, into the Contents frame. You can also use the links at the bottom of this page if you desire.
This procedure concentrates on the assembly and setup of the PC itself. It does not deal with any of the important pre-assembly work, such as planning a system, specifying and purchasing components, etc. These will be covered in future sections of The PC Guide, with links placed here as appropriate. It does, however, include the important steps after assembly is completed, which most other assembly procedures gloss over: testing the system, getting the CD-ROM drive running, and installing the operating system. I assume the installation of Windows 95 here, just because it is the most popular operating system right now.

Note: The procedure overview below applies to the whole build procedure. Each of the individual subprocedures also has its own overview, which you will see when you select one from the Index Frame.

Reset Windows Password

Forgot your administrator password? This page provides step-by-step how to reset your local Windows password. This only works for local user accounts, however, not domain accounts.
The password recovery tool from this page is written by Petter Nordahl-Hagen, and the original information, as well as the downloadable tool, can be found from his website. Per author's information, this tool should work for Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista.
WARNING! Users who have EFS encrypted files on the Windows XP or Vista computers will loose access to the EFS encrypted files after recovery of your password.
The tool can be downloaded here. With this tool, you should be able to reset your local administrator password in case you lost your password and cannot logon to Windows again.
Use this trick at your own risks
I. Download the bootdisk:
Download the bootdisk, which includes the password recovery tool here. The file contains the ISO CD image.
Unzip the ISO file and burn the ISO file to a CD. Note that this is an ISO file, you must burn it to CD as an ISO image, not a normal files. To find out how, click here.
II. Understanding the process:
You'll use the bootdisk created from the above steps to bootup your computer, which you want to reset your administrator password.
You'll be asked for things like: which drive is the boot drive, which path to the SAM file, etc.. but don't worry, detailed information will be provided.
Once you have selected an account to reset the password, you'll need to type in a new password; however, it is highly recommended to use a BLANK password at this point, then you can change your password later in Windows.
Follow the prompts to the end. You'll need to save the changes at the end!

The instructions below would help you to:
Show (or hide) System files and folders using the Registry Editor.
Showing all files and folders is good in certain ways. Windows, by default, disables this option to keep the users from accidently deleting files. It is a good practice to hide those files and folders if you don't want to mess with them. They have been created that way for some good reasons. However, to many of us, specially the software programmers, it might be more convenient to work with files/folders when we have them all displayed.
IMPORTANT This article contains information about registry modification. Modifying the registry incorrectly might cause critical problems to your computer. Make sure you understand the registry and back it up before modifying it.
IMPORTANT The System files and folders are set to be hidden by Windows defaults to keep users from accidently remove them. Deleting system files or folders could cause critical problems on the computer. So be aware when you work on the files/folders if you have them all shown up.
It is a good practice to keep the system files and folders hidden to avoid unawared actions. However, if you really need to display them all, read on for the instructions.

Use this trick at your own risks
Here's how to enable/disable hidden files/folders using the "Registry Editor"

Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform, which has been under development for the past 6 months. Gecko 1.9.1 is an incremental release on the previous version with significant changes to improve web compatibility, performance, and ease of use:
Web standards improvements in the Gecko layout engine
Added support for CSS 2.1 and CSS 3 properties
A new tab-switching shortcut that shows previews of the tab you're switching to
Improved control over the Smart Location Bar using special characters to restrict your search
Support for new web technologies such as the
Mozilla provides Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X in a variety of languages. You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 here. For builds for other systems and languages not provided by Mozilla.org, see the Contributed Builds section at the end of this document.

Please note that installing Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 will overwrite your existing installation of Firefox. You won’t lose any of your bookmarks or browsing history, but some of your extensions and other add-ons might not work until updates for them are made available.

So what is Windows 7?

It's the next version of Windows for PCs, and it's the result of working hand-in-hand with our partners and with people who use Windows in the real world every day. We're paying particular attention to the things they're telling us are important to them and will make their PCs work the way they want them to—things like enhanced reliability, responsiveness, and faster boot and shut-down. We're also trying to make their everyday tasks easier, like connecting and syncing devices, browsing the web, and managing a home network.

Of course, we're also working on new capabilities, so people will be able to do things with Windows 7 that were difficult (or perhaps impossible) to do with PCs before. Finally, we're working hard to ensure that Windows 7 will run on any PC and work with any program that works today with Windows Vista, so upgrading from Windows Vista will be easy.
